Research

Broadly, my research is focused on helping students with learning difficulties succeed in the classroom. I use a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Listed below are key areas of my research program.

Anti-Ableist Disability Discussion

My most recent research, inspired by my teaching, focuses on teachers in both K-12 and higher education discuss disability with their students. I am particularly interested in how teachers conduct anti-ableist disability discussions. Anti-ableist disability discussions encourage students to understand that human variation is normal, to question stereotypes related to disability, and to develop a deeper awareness of disability rights.

Mathematics Learning Disabilities

I have also conducted work related to mathematics learning disabilities. Specifically, I have investigated the processes and skills that underlie mathematics achievement with an eye toward improving educational practice for students who are struggling in mathematics.

Interested in gaining experience conducting research related to disability?

I find the opportunity to mentor and collaborate with SHU undergraduate and graduate students to be extremely rewarding. Past students have worked on projects related to how social studies teachers teach about disability, how disability is addressed in mathematics textbooks, and more!
